Description:

When this book appeared in 1874 it caused a great sensation. It was written to demonstrate that Mercersburg theology was inconsistent with both Protestantism in general and the Reformed confessions in particular.

Schneck does not provide an in-depth critique but clearly shows the key points at which Mercersburg is at variance with the Reformed confessional tradition. This critique was written shortly before his death, and Schneck and other such mature, godly fathers in the faith should be honored not merely for their years but for the wisdom God gave them to warn the church of coming dangers. We today would do well to learn from the aged in the church who speak in a way no young man can speak.

Its message continues to be relevant in the light of recent interest in the views of John W. Nevin which demonstrates that the influence of the Mercersburg Theology continues. It has had a recurring appeal among mainline liberal churches with Reformed and Presbyterian background, but its leaven has now also begun to infiltrate conservative Reformed and Presbyterian churches as some are seeking for another model for theology and worship.
